DELAND, Fla., April 5, 2019 – Nearly 100 community members joined AdventHealth DeLand for a free community luncheon titled, “Let’s Talk Shoulder”, on March 25 at Venue 142 in DeLand.
Led by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brandon Steen, guests learned about the mechanics of shoulders, how to avoid injury, pain-relief options, surgery methods and more.
“Shoulder problems are very common, second to back pain concerns,” said Steen. "The pain can come on gradually or abruptly, and it may range from mild to excruciating.”
During the seminar, Steen explained the variety of shoulder issues and the options available to help ease the pain.
While a variety of pain relievers can be used, there are treatment options that don’t require medications, such as stopping offending activities, icing - not heating - the shoulder joint, stretching and physical therapy. If the pain is persistent and does not go away, a visit to a physician is recommended.
“Ninety percent of shoulder issues get better with ice, medication, injections and physical therapy,” said Steen. “However, if the pain goes on for over three months, if there is persistent weakness even with therapy or there is acute traumatic injury with weakness and dysfunction, it is time to visit an orthopedic physician.”
Steen is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon with Florida Orthopedic Associates, specializing in shoulder and elbow surgery.
