PALM COAST, Fla., October 5, 2018 To help cancer patients, Cadette Girl Scout Katelynne Parker handmade pillows and seatbelt covers to cushion the sensitive areas where cancer patients may have ports for their on-going treatments.
A Palm Coast resident, freshman at Flagler Palm Coast High School, and member of Girl Scout Troop #215, Parker gifted these items to AdventHealth Flagler for cancer patients who visit the hospitals Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Center.
This project has special meaning to me because my great aunt and my grandmother both passed away from cancer, said Parker. I am very excited about being able to make someone’s journey for their treatments more comfortable.
Our visitors will definitely appreciate the fantastic effort that Katelynne has made to help others in our community, said Debbie Ridgely, chair of AdventHealth Palm Coast Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Center, a free service and information hub.
Since opening in Feb. 2010, AdventHealth Palm Coast Judith C. Macko Cancer Resource Center has served nearly 10,500 visitors. The Resource Centers trained volunteers work with healthcare professionals, cancer patients and family members, providing education and free cosmetic cancer supplies, such as wigs, prostheses, and bras.
Parker began creating these port pillows and seatbelt covers a year ago as she worked towards earning the Girl Scouts Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.
I am so proud of her, as well as all of the girls in my troop, for putting forth the effort, the time and their hearts into their Silver Awards, on top of all of the homework and extracurricular activities they have this year, said Kim Parker, Troop #215 Leader and Katelynn’s mother.
